...after doing all this stuff we got to “work the boards” while they dregged the sheep. That was an experience. Dregging the sheep is when the farmer takes a sheep and drags it, sticks it head between his knees and shaves off the nasty, poopy wool on their butt then (literally) kicking them down a little ramp. Yeah...didn’t look very pleasant...but it was really cool. Rata’s brother T and nephew Cain were doing that part. T even sheared a few all the way! Watching a sheep get sheared is like watching someone get stripped of all their clothing...awk...all that’s left is a pile of wool and a naked sheep.
We made lunch and planned our adventure for the afternoon. Sheila had mentioned that down the road about 3 km there was a 30 min bush walk (there was also a 3 hr one but it had river crossings and was too intense). She also mentioned hitching (hitch hiking) along the road to get there and back. She said it was safe. So we tramped down the road to get to the start of our 30 min tramp. A little weird but whatever. We walked all the way there and when we got there we decided “what the heck” we are already here and there is a waterfall to see if we go on the 3 hour walk. We went for it. We estimated that it would only take us about 2 ish hours because we are awesome. Well the trail ended up being about 8 inches deep of mud in places and a bit longer than we had imagined. Slipping everywhere.
The bush was great, tree ferns, vines, moss and about 55,000 different kinds of ferns growing everywhere.
We talked LNT as we cut switchbacks and were never on the trail ;) The waterfall was epic!
The whole stream was eroding into a huge mass of conglomerate. I had never seen so much conglomerate or seen the erosional pattern. It was cool as. We hiked through the rest of the fern tree bush in the mud and came out to the road around 6 ish. We were supposed to be back for dinner a about 6. Oops. When the hike was taking longer than we though, we decided to hitch back. So we started walking and NO cars came by. It was quite depressing really...and I was hungry. Once we were about half way back there was a car and we stuck out our thumbs and they drove right by. Then they proceeded to stop a little further up at a fork in the road to look at their maps, then as we got close they drove off. Jerks. :) Then we kept walking back and at about 7ish. It was getting pretty dark and we were very late for tea. When we could see the farm, we see a car pull out and drive toward us. Sheila had decided to come find us....hahaha we were so close. So we got a ride for the very last part. Then she fed us brown rice with a delicious venison stew on top and pita bread!!
