First, let’s think about the broad geology of the earth recently. There have been a few major geologic hazards while I have been away. The Haiti quake happened right before I left for NZ and while I have been here Chile shook as well as Baja, LA, Utah, China and Taiwan and now there is a volcano UNDER A GLACIER that is erupting and causing havoc. I wonder if I should be concerned about living in the “Shaky Isles”? or just interested? This semester has been very geologically active both globally and academically. :)

Ever since Easter Break I have been working on the Foraminifera Report (which is a microscope slide of about a 30-50 dead micro-organism’s shells, sorted, identified and arranged and a report about the findings and what that implies for the mustone we extracted these little buggers from) and my Borland Report (which is a 10-15 page report, map, cross-section, 2 strat columns and 2 chronostrat columns) and stats homework and regular stuff as well. For the first week after break I consistently went to bed between 1 and 3am. During one of these late nights I started working on my schedule for Miami. I can’t change it for another few days, but I was just looking through and seeing what was possible for this semester and for my entire time at MU. I discovered that it might be possible to add another major!! It would be a geography degree called “Urban and Regional Planning”. Doesn’t sound too flash from the name, but I would do lots of map classes, some poly sci classes! and a class on how to make maps on a computer!! I am actually pretty excited about the possibility. The only downfall is that I will have to take 19-21 credits/semester. This is rough. I also have two jobs to go back to and I’m starting research with Dr. Rakovan as well. I will be so busy!! I’m still weighing the options between...laid back two years and graduating with a BS in geology, a co-major in environmental science and a BA in geography! Mean as!
A few other eventful things happened during this week of late nights in the geology building. I have become very comfortable and attached to this geology building. It has heaps of character, fun people, information, good desk space and great lighting. Anyway, late one evening (really it was morning by this time)...Jenn and I were the only ones in the geology building, it was about 5am, and we just started talking about things that really matter, like God, family, friends, ballet and music. We both just talked about how we had been doing, really doing, during our time in NZ so far. It was really good to talk about and very encouraging. We ended up playing each other our favorite songs and just trying to get a few things done in between. She was doubting that she was in the right place because the beginning of the semester was rough, then she discovered that one of her room mates is going through a really incredibly hard thing and she has lived through the exact same thing. That is God working and putting people in the right place at the right time to help each other! Awesome. It was such a good feeling of fellowship that night that I had not had in a long time, just hanging out in the first year lab down stairs in the geology building. We also discovered that we have the same favorite hymn....In Christ Alone. We went to bed at about 4am and got up for church at 9. Church was great! A gentleman from Wellington spoke about the first couple beatitudes and the music was quite uplifting too. I think I just worked on my school work the rest of Sunday, I don’t remember.
Monday (three weeks ago) was a very special sort of day. I was running on just a few hours of precious sleep time and was at the library after statistics working on my report, drinking coffee (which was essential during these few weeks) and grooving to classic rock. I was visibly grooving...in the library...at about 2 in the afternoon. What a dork! I was pretty much high on life. I couldn’t stop smiling and thinking about how freaking amazing it is that I am here, living it up in the NZ. In the afternoon I went on a New World (the grocery store) adventure with Simon and I got some extra food. The plan with the extra food was to make dinner for Jenn and Whitney! The came over after a test they had and I made cheesy potatoes, pasta and corn and this delicious juice I just got. It was so fun to make food for other people and I had been eating dinners by myself, in between studying for so long that is was a very welcome break. :)
