On the last day in the field they let us loose in our groups to map a huge area...so we hiked and took notes from 10am to 6pm. It was awesome! We got to do whatever we wanted and make our own plan. We had lunch on top of a hill over looking the whole place...our lunch was over an hour long. :) We sang so many random songs and made up a bunch of stupid jokes. Anyway, it was just me, laura, simon and tim. At one point we went into a "restricted area"....it was all farm land and we happened to hop a fence that we weren't supposed to...but it turned out great! We found a big basalt boulder on top of a cliff and we started hitting it with the hammer and we found the coolest stuff. We found calcite minerals that were secondary to the basalt. They formed in the vesicles and cracks of the basalt. We found a big one that was purple! Purple calcite! and it had very good crystal faces and cleavage so we could identify it and we had some HCl acid too. Laura and I both have a piece of the purple part. Simon found a unch of cool stuff once he started destroying the boulder with my hammer. He found green globular calcite. That is really weird. it was like a hard pocket of frog eggs in an igneous rock! So crazy. I love minerals. This was my favorite thing we found! it was a great day.
